Homeless in Taiwan

One of the peculiarly charming things I first noticed in Taibei was the dogs roaming the streets, casually swaggering alongside bipedal pedestrians. These are not known as wild dogs; my friend told me the term is homeless dogs. They sleep on the stoops of storefronts, and wander around the alley. It seemed to me that some hospitable food-stalls fed some of the dogs, which is a nice thought.

There was, however, I cat whining in the backstreet outside my hotel window. Now that was annoying, and I would have appreciated my canine friends doing something to shut that cat up.

Hey - sorry I missed you when you were in Beijing. I'm always interested in reading what other people think of Taiwan, as I've never yet been there and keep thinking I should go before it gets Liberated.

Some of what you describe -- the narrow, bustling streets, especially, and the "China the way it would be if Chinatowns were an accurate depiction" thing -- can be found in Macau, too. Don't know if you've been there yet. I really dug Macau -- sleepy, and there didn't seem to be much to do besides the casinos and temples, but there was still a definite sense of it being a proper city -- something that's hard to find in Mainland cities.

Brendan- Would be interested to hear what you think of Taiwan. I've yet to meet anyone who really likes both places equally...

Yeah I've been to Macau once in 2005 and really liked it. I was only there for a day, mainly on the quiet island where Black Sand Beach is.

Oh, and it plays a nice backdrop to the Thai film "Invisible Waves", which is brilliant.

I've heard it's really expensive now though...
